Applying to the Dive Program
What is required to enter the PSU Scientific Dive program?
Demonstrate a need to dive. The PSU dive program is intended to train our students or employees that are required to dive as part of their job function, or graduate course work. Individuals currently working on or will be working for a PSU lab sponsored graduate research project, or field lab work are eligible to receive Scientific diver training.
Contact the Dive Safety Office at orp-scidive@psu.edu to see if you qualify for scientific diver training.
- PSU User ID (abc1234) – not your 9-digit ID
- Your affiliation with Penn State: student, faculty or employee
- Need for participation in the course and affiliation with lab
Other requirements:
- Show proof of open water SCUBA certification
- Be able to pass a swim and water skills evaluation
- Pass a medical evaluation
- Complete the program application
- As part of the course all PSU Scientific Divers must obtain 100 hours of training and demonstrate a high level of dive proficiency
- Divers who successfully complete PSU’s Scientific Diver training program are awarded an AAUS Scientific Diver certification
Once you have access to Bloop and have read Penn State’s Scientific Diving Standards Manual, there are several appendices you will need to fill out and upload to your Bloop account. Below, please find a list of the appendices you will need to complete and upload, along with the corresponding certification field in Bloop.
