Research Integrity Standing Committee
The Research Integrity Standing Committee supports the Research Integrity Officer in the research misconduct process and seeks to raise awareness and increase transparency of research misconduct procedures. The committee also seeks to promote a culture of research integrity across the university by helping to inform the development of resources that encourage the responsible conduct of research. The Committee is supported by the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and the Senior Vice President for Research.
Committee Details
Time Commitment
Members serve a term of 2 to 3 years, with the possibility of renewal. For each case, the Research Integrity Officer (RIO) helps faculty assess the time commitment so the committee member can determine if they are able to offer assistance at that time. The aim is to limit the committee’s involvement to one case per year.
Training
All committee members complete a 1-hour annual training focused on handling allegations of research misconduct. This training covers common challenges such as assessing intent and evaluating the preponderance of the evidence. Additional training is offered as needed or upon request, and we continuously evaluate the training needs of the committee as it becomes more established.
Pool Composition
The Committee is composed of representatives from across the university, including those from Commonwealth campuses, and spans a broad range of disciplines.
Case-Specific Committee
Each case includes at least one standing committee member. The RIO may seek external expertise when necessary, or standing committee members may serve as chairs, with two external members assisting as needed.
Recognition
Members play a vital role in fostering an environment of integrity and trust in our research community. Serving on the Committee is recognized as both professional development and institutional service; providing opportunities for research or service that contributes to promotion and tenure review.
