CITI
Certain trainings required by the Offices for Research Protections and Export Compliance are completed through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative, known as CITI. These requirements include research compliance and protections trainings, as well as training for the completion of SARI@PSU requirements.
Note: RCR training cannot replace the required IRB or IACUC CITI courses.
Researchers cannot submit their individual CITI certifications to PSU/COM. Certifications must come directly from the CITI program. Please use the information below to either create or connect your CITI account with Penn State.
CITI Course Expiration
- IRB and GCP trainings are valid for 3 years, whether the initial course or refresher.
- For expiring IRB or GCP training, complete the refresher course.
- IACUC training for Penn State Health and the College of Medicine does not expire.
- IACUC training for University Park, Commonwealth, and other non-Hershey personnel is valid for 3 years, whether the initial course or refresher.
- For expiring IACUC training, complete the refresher course.
- Biosafety and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens training must be completed annually.
- For expiring OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens training, retake the full course.
- For expiring Yearly Biosafety training, add a new Biosafety course.
- RCR training does not expire.
- When training is about to expire, an email notification will be sent from the CITI Program.

Access CITI through citi.psu.edu. You will be taken to a screen that gives the option of creating a new account or affiliating with Penn State. If you already have a CITI account (including one from another institution), choose the option “I already have a CITI Program account.” If you have not registered with CITI before, choose the option to create an account.
Non-Penn State Individuals
CITI training is available to non-Penn State individuals if they have an affiliation with our institution. PSU limited accounts can access CITI through the log-in buttons at citi.psu.edu using the credential information provided by Penn State. Create a limited account online.
CITI from Another Institution
- Note: do NOT create a new CITI account, as that will result in duplicate records
- IRB:
- First, log in with your Penn State credentials at citi.psu.edu. Choose the option “I already have a CITI Program account.”
- Second, register for the Penn State basic human subjects research course, even if you’ve already completed the basic course at a different institution. Registering for the basic course will transfer applicable modules into your profile.
- Finally, complete any remaining Penn State modules to fulfill your training requirements.
- IACUC:
- At University Park, training from another institution is reviewed for acceptance on a case by case basis. Please contact IACUC-ORP@psu.edu for more information. For College of Medicine, see the Penn State Health and College of Medicine Research Compliance Training Requirements web page.
- IBC:
- Penn State’s Regulated Biohazardous Materials program does not accept outside training. Please take/retake any required Safety training via CITI. Be sure to log in using your appropriate PSU location.
