NIH Reminder: Other Support Disclosures

Penn State Shield Outline
October 1, 2025

This is a reminder that all NIH researchers identified as Senior/Key Personnel must disclose to NIH any other support they receive to “ensure there is no scientific, budgetary, or commitment overlap.”  Unless stated otherwise in the funding opportunity, this information must be disclosed at just-in-time notices, and progress reports (RPPRs) and is a requirement of University Policy RA20.

What is Other Support?

NIH defines other support as “all resources made available to a researcher in support of and/or related to all of their research endeavors, regardless of whether or not they have monetary value and regardless of whether they are based at the institution the researcher identifies for the current grant.”

Per NIH, this includes but is not limited to:

  • Other active and pending awards.
  • Resources and/or financial support from all foreign and domestic entities available to the researcher, such as
    • financial support for laboratory personnel,
    • provision of high-value materials that are not freely available (e.g., biologics, chemical, model systems, technology, etc.).
  • Consulting agreements, if conducting research will be part of the consulting activities.
  • In-kind contributions, e.g., office/laboratory space, equipment, supplies, or employees or students supported by an outside source.
  • Per NIH, “estimate in-kind value to the best of your professional judgment, using comparable contributions, estimated averages and fair-market rates.”

Examples of Other Support:

  • You are hosting a visiting scholar who receives funding from their home institution; you will need to disclose this as other support.
  • You have a joint institute project with a foreign institution and receive de-identified data for use in the project.
  • You receive a cell line or other materials from a colleague.

Other support does not include training awards, prizes, or gifts (gifts are resources provided where there is no expectation of anything in return). Institutional resources, such as core facilities or shared equipment that are made broadly available should be listed under Facilities and Other Resources.

Note for Training Grants: Information on Other Support is not specifically requested for Program Directors, training faculty, and other individuals involved in the oversight of training grants since applicable information is collected in other sections of a training grant application.

Please see NIH’s Other Support web page and the Office of Sponsored Programs webpage for examples and additional information. Questions should be directed osp@psu.edu.
